Looking at these shots of Turner Field, I’m amazed how how much different the shots came out. I took them from the same seat, but I was sitting for the second shot. You can tell the difference in the angle when you’re looking at the scoreboard. Also, the upper deck on the right is wavy in the day shot, I don’t know what accounts for that oddity. It could be that the night shot is composed of four separate shots, and the day shot is composed of only three. Anyhow, it was cool to be able to get to such different shots on one night. I think the night is my favorite.

Summit County in Ohio has paved a trail along nearly every inch of the Ohio and Erie Canals. Riding a bike along the trail this past Saturday, July 4th, I didn’t see anyone on the trail. That was great for me, but made me sad for the citizens of Barberton. This beautiful greenway offers great views of nature taking back what belonged to her before industry rolled into this small suburb of Akron. I hope more people get out there and enjoy it.

The nice thing about North Carolina, is that even in the dead of winter (a winter in which we had two snow storms of more than 4 inches each) we get some warm days tossed in. On one of those days, my son and I biked out to the local park. He always shuns the playground for this forested space full of all the boulders that were turned up during park construction. I thought the low, morning light trickling through the trees gave off a nice look.

So much of the French Quarter is clostrophobic (4-5 story buildings built to the curb on both sides of a 1-1/2 lane street), so it’s really hard to capture the charm and historic feel in a panoramic shot. I was glad to stumble on a spot on the banks of the Mississippi where the road was wide enough to capture a long stretch of the buildings that really captures the feel of the French Quarter, buildings mashed together in varying degrees of repair and disrepair.

This is the St. Louis Cathedral on Jackson Square. I wasn’t sure how to display the photo. It really only makes sense with the altar (currently on the left) at the bottom. I was facing that way as I snapped pictures while slowly turning my head up until I was taking pictures over my head and behind me, but then it messed up the look of the page. I figure that anyone who might have a use for the picture can figure out how to turn it.

When my family and I travel from Chapel Hill to visit family living in Ohio, we always pass Pilot Mountain, but never have time to stop. With a day off for Veteran’s Day we decided to drive up, do a little hiking, and have lunch in the Winston-Salem Arts District. Though the peak shown below has the characteristic shape that most people in the area recognize, there is a secondary, smaller peak, from which I snapped the picture below.

I passed my 30th birthday without seeing the Mississippi River, so hitting the banks of the Big Muddy was high on my list. It was, in fact, a big, muddy river. The first shot below is on the east banks on the western edge of downtown Memphis.

No trip to Memphis would be complete without an evening out on Beale Street. It just happened to be hot rod night when I was visiting, which meant that local enthusiasts brought out their cars for the admiration of drunken revelers.

Carolina Beach offers a fantastic biking opportunity. I took a trip from the Fishing Pier (pictured) at the northernmost tip of the town all the way through Kure Beach to the North Carolina Aquarium. If you’ve got another half mile in you, you could continue on to the Southport Ferry and hit 3 towns in one day.

This was the year of Believeland, but it wasn’t to be. I froze my butt off watching my Browns loose their shot at the playoffs during this game. The picture brings back bad memories, but it’s a good shot, none-the-less.

It is suuuuch a bear to get up at sunrise when you’re on vacation, but as you can see, an early morning walk on Carolina Beach was well worth the effort. This may be my favorite off all the shots I’ve taken.
